Dress for Arctic winter conditions
When exploring Northern Norway in winter, proper clothing is crucial. The weather and temperature can quickly change.
Wool, windproof, and waterproof clothing are essential. Another tip is to dress in layers. Avoid cotton or polyester directly against the skin, as wool is better suited to keep you warm (wool retains warmth even when wet).

Layering - over the base layers, you can add a layer of fleece or wool.

Outermost layer - wind and waterproof outer jacket and pants (they must be insulated)

Warm winter shoes and ice grips are also useful. Especially on icy and slippery roads. Ice grips can be purchased at local sports/clothing stores.

Sunglasses and sunscreen are also important to protect you from the dazzling winter light and the reflection of the sun on the snow.

Safe driving
When driving in Northern Norway in winter, it is important to be aware of road conditions. Stay updated with updates from the Norwegian Public Roads Administration via their website: www.statensvegvesen.no.
Do not rely solely on maps and navigation apps, as they do not always take local conditions and closed roads into account.
Weather conditions
In winter, weather conditions can be challenging. Slippery roads and temperatures that can drop dramatically, are common challenges. Also, be aware that effective cold temperatures can be significantly lower due to wind. Stay updated with weather forecasts from reliable sources such as Yr.no or Storm.no. Dress according to the weather!
Plan your trip - long distances and local conditions
Northern Norway is known for its long distances and scattered settlements. Before setting out, research what facilities are available where you are going.
Some areas may have limited access to shops, gas stations, and restaurants. Bring some clothes and extra food/snacks for the car ride.
Respect for nature and culture
Respect nature and culture during your stay. Take care of your trash and respect local rules. Also, consider wild animals. Keep your dog on a leash in the periods from April 1st to August 20th.
Be aware that the use of drones may be restricted or prohibited in certain areas for the sake of wildlife and local communities.
Within the Lyngen Alps Landscape Protection Area, Reisa National Park, and other nature reserves, it is forbidden to use a drone unless you have obtained permission to do so. If you want to fly a drone within one of these areas, you must apply for permission.

Safety - avalanches and emergencies
Northern Norway is prone to avalanches, especially in mountainous areas. If you are going on a ski tour or hiking in the mountains: always check alerts from www.varsom.no and follow the advice of local authorities and experienced guides. When going on ski tours, make sure to bring necessary equipment such as a shovel, probe, and avalanche transceiver. Always carry a map, compass, and a fully charged phone.
Let people outside the group know where you are going. For example, you can inform your accommodation, or leave a note on your cars windshield.
