The Lyngenfjord region in Northern Norway has recently launched its first mountain biking guide presenting the region’s spectacular mountain biking trails above the Arctic Circle.
“We want to show mountain biking enthusiasts from around the world all the wonderful mountain biking trails we have in our region,” says Visit Lyngenfjord’s Director of Tourism, Georg Sichelschmidt, adding: “Mountain biking in Lyngenfjord is naturally exciting and is a world-class experience above the Arctic Circle.”

The Lyngenfjord region is widely known for ski touring in the Lyngen Alps, but now it’s time to raise awareness of the region’s hidden secret. It’s also a great destination for spectacular mountain biking during the summer and early autumn.
Sichelschmidt says the new mountain biking guide is unique and certainly the first of its kind in Northern Norway. “Our project manager did not come across similar comprehensive mountain biking guides for other European destinations north of the Arctic Circle. Mountain biking is a relatively new activity here, so this is the first time such comprehensive information about these trails is available.”
The guide presents 25 different spectacular trails throughout the region, each of which has its own character and distinctive features. It includes maps, photos and detailed descriptions in both Norwegian and English. “All the trails offer exciting and memorable mountain biking adventures in spectacular landscape and are perfect for experienced mountain bikers seeking new thrills,” he says.
The mountain biking season in the Lyngenfjord region is from June to September. As the region is well north of the Arctic Circle, mountain bikers can experience the golden rays of the Midnight Sun in summer and set off on mountain biking adventures in the middle of the night! On clear evenings in September, it’s possible to experience the mystical Northern Lights from the bike seat.
Visit Lyngenfjord has gained the quality label as a ‘Sustainable Destination’. “This is not just empty words. We are proud of this recognition but see it as our obligation to work in a sustainable manner in everything we do. The mountain biking project is a good example of this, and it has been approved by the local population, the landowners, the municipalities and, no least, the Sami reindeer owners.”
Most of the trails are completely natural but development work has taken place in some areas. “We hope by raising awareness of the huge potential for mountain biking in this region and creating comprehensive information about the various trails, the local municipal councils and others will be involved in the maintenance of the trails.”
