Spåkenes

If you visit Spåkenes, you can experience the remnants of a German coastal fort from World War II and a wonderful view of the Lyngenfjord at the same time.

Route description

Spåkenes, which is located on the border between the municipalities of Nordreisa and Kåfjord, offers a wonderful historical experience of a World War II coastal fort. The site by the fjord is also a perfect spot to enjoy the Midnight Sun and panoramic views of the open sea, Kåfjord and the majestic Lyngen Alps on the other side of the fjord. To the north, you can catch a glimpse of the islands of Arnøya and Nord-Fugeløy!

Getting here

The path starts by the E6 highway between Nordreisa and Kåfjord. You can park by the road at the top of the hill then follow the tractor road on foot to the coastal fort. You can also walk on the network of small paths in the area. The walk to the purpose-built lookout for birdwatchers is about 4 km from the road, while the coastal fort is 2.8 km.

War relics at Spåkenes

The fort was built by the Germans during the war. Although it was destroyed when they left, several bunkers and gun sites remain, which you can explore. You can read more about the coastal fort at Spåkenes on the many information signs erected in the area.

Experience the rich bird life

A visit to Spåkenes can offer other experiences too. The area is renowned for its rich birdlife, and the purpose-built birdwatching tower offers great views of the whole area. Did you know that around 60 different bird species have been observed from the lookout? Spring and autumn are good times to watch the various migratory birds.

Be aware that the path to the birdwatching tower crosses a marsh, which can be wet.The tower commands a complete 360-degree view so, if you bring binoculars and are patient, you may spot porpoises and seals. In autumn, you can also pick lingonberries and gather edible mushrooms at Spakenes.
