Travel to Lyngenfjord

There are several ways to reach the Lyngenfjord region, the closest bigger airport is Tromsø. Close by you will also find the airports Bardufoss og Sørkjosen. Buses from Tromsø, Narvik and Alta is also an option or the expressboat from Tromsø. If you are traveling by public transport we advise you to plan well as there are limited departures. An alternative can be to rent your own car or contact some of the regional transport companies.

By plane

When you arrive by plane from abroad, you usually fly via Oslo. From there you continue to Tromsø (TOS), the closest and most popular airport. Alternatives are Bardufoss (BDU) or Alta (ALF). Sørkjosen (SQJ) is also an option with a stopover in Tromsø.

Airlines operating these airports are Norwegian, SAS and Widerøe.

Furthermore there are direct flights from London, Stockholm and Helsinki to Tromsø

By car 

To experience the Lyngenfjord region in your own time, driving your own car/rental car is a good alternative.

You ca rent a car from f.ex. AVIS, Hertz, Europcar or Sixt, they are situated in Tromsø Airport and Tromsø city.

Directions from Tromsø

Direction Lyngen, Lyngseidet and Nord-Lenangen:

If you drive from Tromsø, the route will follow the E8 to Fagernes (20 km) and then on along the Rv 91 to the quayside at Breivikeidet where the ferry comes in. The 20-minute boat trip over to Svensby is a perfect opportunity to see the Lyngenalps in a fascinating panorama view from the café that offers coffee, beverages and waffles.

Direction Kåfjord, Olderdalen, Birtavarre, Spåkenes:

If you drive from Tromsø, the route will follow the E8 to Fagernes (20 km) and then on along the Rv 91 to the quayside at Breivikeidet where the ferry comes in. The drive from Svensby to Lyngseidet takes about 30 minutes and from there is a new car ferry over to Olderdalen in Kåfjord that takes 35 minutes.

Arriving in Olderdalen, if you drive north you will reach Nordmannvik og Spåkenes. Driving south takes you to Birtavarre og Manndalen, alternative is driving via Skibotn.

Direction Storfjord, Hatteng, Oteren, Skibotn:

From Tromsø it is a 1 ½ hour drive to Storfjord. The E8 and, after 70 km, the E6 runs through magnificent landscapes with several picnic areas where you can stop and admire the nature. From Tromsø to Skibotn it is about 115 km.

By bus

Public transport around the Lyngenfjord is limited to the buses from Tromsø, Alta or Narvik, as well as the schoolbuses.

The website of Tromskortet has a searchfunction for all the busroutes and departuretimes in English.

Buses from Tromsø departs from the main busstation (Prostneset) close by the touristinformation.There are two routes that departs for the Lyngenfjord region, one to Alta/Storslett via Lyngen (Svensby and Lyngseidet) and Olderdalen or the other one via Nordkjosbotn and takes you to Skibotn.

By expressboat

Are you looking for a possibility to arrive by boat to the Lyngenfjord region, a possibility is the expressboat from Tromsø to Nord-Lenangen. It is the same boat that continues to Skjervøy. Be aware that the expressboat only operates on certain days and does not take cars.
