What is it?

Many tourists have asked “so where is this special midnight sun, how does it look and when can we see it?” We hate to break it but it is actually the same sun as during the day! Midnight sun means that the sun remains visible at the local midnight. During the night hours, the sky is colored with dramatic red and pink shades and the Fjord is reflecting the sunshine. When the sun reach the horizon, it is turning and going up again. Spectacular when seeing it from a good view point!

How can you best experience the Midnight sun?

* If you want to seize the best experience of the midnight sun, find the spots where you can see the horizon and open water! One of the nice places is Lyngstuva. With a top tour in the mountains, you can see the phenomena in a 360-degree angle. Fishing and bicycling is also popular and the best part is that you do not have to adapt the activities to the day- or nighttime!

* You must have patience. The weather in this arctic part of the world can be changing and unpredictable but if you have more days and time to stay, the chances increases for a magic midnight sun experience.

* Talk about the weather- some good clothing is important if you want to experience the light nights! There is actually some words that are unique for our region, for example “warm summer hat” and “summer down jackets”. The best thing is to have different layers with wool close to the body and a wind jacket over it.

When is it?

In Lyngenfjord, the sun starts to shine 24/7 from 20th of May to 22th of July. Other places around:

Tromsø: 20.May- 22.JulyPolar circle: 12.June- 1.JulyAlta: 19.May-24.JulyNorth Cape: 14.May-29.JulySvalbard: 20.April- 22.August

How to sleep

The hardest part of experiencing the exotic light nights in Lyngenfjord is to go to bed! The natural instinct for many of us is to be up as long as the sun is shining and you do not need that much sleep with all the energy that you are getting from the sun. If you still need some rest, make sure you have good curtains or to bring one of those masks to cover your eyes. The animal life is loud during these months, so earplugs for the birdsong can also be a good idea.
